Stereotypes

I think that stereotypes are very hurting such as generalizing.

For example not every blond girl has to be stupid, not every woman has to be interested in fashion and not every man has to be interested in cars and sports.

But the truth is, that people used to judge others on the principle of the first association. So when they see someone with red hair on the street they would probably think that this person is quick-tempered.

What do you think about stereotypes (estereotipos). Is it good or is bad for you? Have you ever been treated stereotypically?

I certainly agree with you, but is it possible to avoid stereotypes? I am speaking philosophically here. Isn't it part of human nature to try to grasp huge concepts by making generalized conclusions? For example, I have never been to Norway, but I have interacted with a few Norwegians, and based on those interactions, would it not be normal for me to make some generalizations?

Some stereotypes are just plain silly (my opinion, here), such as muscular men are not very bright, people who wear glasses are nerds, etc. In my experience, those stereotypes are believed by people of limited education or life experience.

On the other hand, when I have been a "victim" of stereotyping, I have used it as an opportunity to try to review my own views of people. Since I cannot control other people jumping to conclusions about me based on what language I speak, my profession, or beliefs, at least I can try to control conclusions I may jump to about other people.

Yes, I have thought a lot about stereotyping, and the most productive response I have found to it is to try to control my stereotyping of other people.
