A mi entender "cope" significa "lidiar" por ejemplo: lidiar con una situación. - hmartinez, Jan 28, 2010

We need a little more context...

"it would help them to cope"

Lidiar, sobrellevar, ajustarse, hacerle frente/enfrentar???

  • Welcome Leah.

  • As Heidita says, Luis's answer sobrellevar is a good term to use.

  • I've also heard sobrevivir in similar situations.

Personally, my choice would be

  • aguantar

To sustain, to suffer, to bear, to endure; to abide, to stand [up to],

  • Similar verbs in Spanish

tolerar, soportar, sostener, durar

In this case, Luisa has given you a good choice:

el amor de la familia ....les ayudaría a sobrellevar la pérdida.

How about arreglarselas -- "esto podría ayudarles a arreglarselas".

Expressions I have heard for "I can´t cope" are "ya no puedo más" and "no doy abasto".

Hola!

He leído tus comentarios sobre "to cope". Podría decir por ejemplo:

Nadal pudo sobrellevar con la pista rapida durante el US Open?

Gracias por adelantado.

I've looked for a better translation, but haven't found one. Also you could use the verb luchar. I translate for a psychologist, and this is the term we use. - CalvoViejo, Jan 27, 2010
