If you are looking for a translation to the british idiom "what are you like," ¿Cómo es usted? won't do it. I'm not sure how I would translate that... Often idioms just don't translate.

Paralee doesn't seem to agree with you, Evan. Review lesson 1.2. It's true that idioms often don't translate, but this one seems to. - CalvoViejo, Jan 27, 2010
If you were familiar with British English (I lived in England for 2 years), you would understand. The idiom "what are you like" is used to indicate that the person you addressing is being 'cheeky', and is used in a playful manner. - Evan99, Jan 28, 2010
If ¿cómo es usted? is used in the same way I would be surprised, especially since it is a very informal, personal thing to say, with an air of familiarity. - Evan99, Jan 28, 2010

¿Cómo eres? - What are you like?

¿Cómo estás? - How are you?

Eres from ser describes a characterisic. Estás from estar describes a condition.
