Translation Exercise for Beginners: Number 2

Translation Exercise for Beginners: Number 2

So I was so impressed and encouraged by the huge interest and the amazing answers in the first beginners translation exercise, I decided to make this a regular thing. You all did so well that I am going to try to make it just a wee harder! But don't be scared...I'll make sure to keep things at beginners level. Everyone is welcome! Even if you only recognize one or two words, there is a dictionary tab at the top of the page available for you to use. No cheating! In other words no using a translation engine. You will learn nothing that way! So here goes! We will vote for the best answer. Hopefully this time it will be hard enough for you all that I will have to post a translation!

Cuando aprendemos un idioma nuevo, podemos descubrir muchas cosas interesantes y nuevas para expandir nuestras mentes.

As always I welcome corrections as I am not a native speaker.

When we learn a new language we can discover many new and interesting things to expand our minds.

Thanks for this, the other exercises are usually too hard for me. This was ok though, because I didn't know the word descubrir. grin And also I think saying "we are able" instead of "we can" sounds better. But I didn't think of that until I saw dogbert's answer, so this was my honest try (after I looked up descubrir).

Very nice Becky! You not only translated perfectly but managed to make your translation sound English - renaerules, Jan 27, 2010
"We can" is better in this case bacause it is a direct translation, and does not need to be changed for the English translation to be grammaticaly correct. - renaerules, Jan 27, 2010
Oh, ok! Thank you. :) - Becky32, Jan 28, 2010

Awesome job! You did well and I like the "we are able" phrase. It holds a similar context but is not a direct translation...only reason why I chose Becky's. - renaerules, Jan 27, 2010
It made my brain do some exercise. Every little bit helps. Thanks for posting these. - 008f2974, Jan 27, 2010

I am late to these exercises but I want to start with one and work up. My work load is getting a little less and I want to work on some things while we get ready to leave Bogota for Guatemala.

I have reopened this thread as I have come to an agreement with rena who is going to publish revised sentences for beginners and check herself on the result, chosing the best translation in her opinion or the one most voted.

Good job Renagrin

HI rena, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but sorry, this won't do. If you cannot do the corrections yourself, I am sorry, I cannot allow this.

apart from this, the Spanish sentence is incorrect. I am sorry, we do not have enough native speakers who can take up all the work.

I first came up with
When we learn a new language, we can describer more ??? interesting and new for expanding our worlds.

After clicking on a few words, I came up with
When we learn a new language, we can discover many interesting things and new ways to expand our minds.

Thanks everyone for participating! I hope you all had fun and learned a lot. I really enjoyed myself with this one, and thanks to Heidita corrected a few of my own mistakes as well! How else do you learn right? So be looking for the next beginner's exercise posting soon. A big thank you for making this thread a success. Vote for each other's translations and vote for the thread if you would like to enjoy it as a regular thing!

Just a note: It seems like the word descubrir was a challenge for a lot of you since it was confused with describir. So I thought I would make a note of the difference for you.

descubrir = discover

describir = describe
