Welcome to the forum! If you have a sensory or emotional connection to the words you are learning you will learn much faster. Also, it is imperative to speak what you are learning as you are learning it, preferably with a Spanish speaker...at the least outloud to yourself. Lastly, Don't give up! Everyone struggles at some point. Hope this helps.
For me, it really depends on the word. If the word looks like a word in english (celular- cell phone, lago- lake, papel- paper), then it's easy to recognize and memorize.
It is also easier for me to memorize a word if I can relate it to something that has to do with its definition (escalada deportiva- rock climbing. "escalada" almost has "scale" in it, like to scale a wall).
If you have some words that have absolutely no correlation to their english definitions, try looking at the letters in the word for visual clues (camiseta- t-shirt. It is similar to "camisa", but has a "t" in it. Therefore, t-shirt) Another example is "ojos"- eyes. The two "o's" look like little eyes staring at you ![]()
If none of this is helpful at all, use FLASHCARDS! They're an easy way to sort out words you have memorized and ones you don't. As you are reviewing, set aside all the words you know off the top of your head (without cheating!). That will leave you with only the words you need to work on at the end of your review session, and will save you time when you review again later.
Hope this helps!
Be paitient and don't give up. Remember it took you many years to learn your first language. Sometimes progress will be easier than at others.
Try to associate a word with a mental image rather than a translated word. Some words will have similar roots and be therefore will be similar in both languages. In other cases this will not be true A mental image will be faster than trying to translate in your head.
A strong knowledge of your first language can help you learn a second. The Spanish word may not be similar to a the English word that is most commonly used, but may resemble a synonym. Some examples are fabricar is to manufacture (or to fabricate), facilitar is to make easier (or to facilitate), and pensar is to think (or to be pensive).
Expose yourself to the language in as many ways as you can.
- Use the flashchards and games/study aids on this site and elsewhere
- Listen to it on the radio
- Look for and listen to Spanish podcasts
- Read it, a good source is news sites on the internet because idioms are used with less frequency
- Write it, this will help you strengthen your spelling also
- Speak it,especially with a native speaker or someone who is advanced/fluent
- Ask questions, there are a lot of people here willing to help.
And one last thing, have fun with it!
Get post-its and write the names of objects in Spanish. Place the post-its on the corresponding objects. It will help you visualize the word with the object and it will help you build your basic vocabulary (as long as you don't mind the little notes everywhere
).
Try playing the game "memory." Make your own deck of cards. Make 20 or so flash cards with spanish words and on a seperate card their english equivlant. Play the card game memory with them which is fun and helps you remember the words the more you play!
You can go through the flashcards lots of times until you remember them. Then do the recognize, listen and recall, if you get a high score, say 180, then you know you can remember those words.
