A general rule of thumb would be "something you do to yourself."

Por ejemplo, casarse = to punish yourself. Uh, I mean, to get married.

A reflexive verb is any verb whose meaning is altered by a reflexive pronoun. A very good example is the verb, "duchar," which means, "to shower." In Spanish, one doesn't say, "I took a shower." That is an English idiom. In Spanish, one would say what translates to, "I shower myself," or "me ducho." I hope this helps some.
