When I was a child

I would to know if, apart from "when I was a child" I can say: "when I was small" and "when I was younger" to say the same. Thank you.

All three terms would have the same context in Spanish and English.

When I was a child=cuando era niña

When I was little (small)=cuando era pequeña

When I was younger=cuando era menor

The are different nuances according to context. When I was younger is ambiguous as to exact age. If you are older, as I am, "when I was younger" could refer to early adulthood; not childhood as the 1st two do.

Hi nila! The phrase "when I was younger" only speaks of your childhood if you are a young adult. Like qfreed pointed out if you are an older person and you use the term "when I was younger" It can simply be refering to a previous time anywhere in your adult life. You can make this vague phrase a little more specific by saying, "when I was much younger". However anyway you put it this particular phrase is relative to the age of the person that is speaking.

Yes, we might say "When I was more young," but it doesn't sound right.

"When I was younger" is the way to go.

Interesting thread. Thanks. Yippee! I learned not to say "Cuando era más joven," which I am sure I've done. Pero nunca más...

"When I was younger". This is one of my main doubts.

In Spanish, we would never say "cuando era más joven" to refer to the childhood.

But, I was imagining that you the English speakers say that also for childhood.

Cuando era un niño.

That's my guess.

The imperfect is used with past ages: cuando era un níno - 0074b507, Jan 23, 2010
I think she is asking about English usage, however, not Spanish. - 0074b507, Jan 23, 2010
