My online Collins Universal (Unabridged) displays:
atroz ADJ 1 (= terrible) atrocious

In the RAE online (RAE definition for atroz), I find this:
atroz.

And in light of this, I am not sure that the the pyramids would be considered atroz just because it was apparantly tough going for the climbers getting to the top.

"Vamos a encontrarnos al lado la estatua atroz que está en el vestíbulo"... cualquier nativo interpreta que la estatua es horrible!!!
(Aunque la RAE lo tenga como una de sus acepciones, no es una de las primeras y en la vida diaria la palabra atroz no se usa como sinónimo de inmenso.Tiene más bien una connotación negativa)
