Where do I start?

Where do I start?

I just found this site. Looks good.

It's impossible for me to learn this language. Where do I start? It's been only 25 years of trying to learn. I can only speak well enough to communicate when drunk (I'm serious it's the truth). I've been to Cali Colombia and Venezuela many times up to 15 years ago and had much exposure but no formal training and I'm just too stupid to learn.

¡Hola!

This site is the best site you will ever find on the Internet for learning Spanish. There are many people here who have extensive knowledge of the language, and are very happy to help you learn.

However, you need to change your outlook. A person can only succeed in any endeavor if they believe they can succeed. There is an old saying: "What can be conceived, and believed, can be achieved." I believe the quote is from Earl Nightingale.

Believe in yourself! You have come this far to find this site, so you have already started your journey.

A sentence like "I'm too stupid to learn" is a misnomer. If you were that "stupid", you would have used the word "to" not "too" in that statement. So you are incorrect in your assumptions about yourself and your abilities, by your own words!

Change your sentence from "It's impossible for me to learn this language" to "it's possible for me to learn this language". If you believe something to be true, than for you it will be.

So believe in yourself. You can do it!

Thank you for the encouragement. I very much appreciate it. My journey in learning the language started 25 years ago, but has not been completed and most likely never will. I’m sorry for taking up space on this website with my problem, but if any site ca - TooStupid2Learn, Jan 20, 2010

Yes, 100000%! Most likely more than most here. I can understand 50% or more when spoken to depending on dialects/modismos, but my brain seems to "lock up" when I try to speak and can not read it well. - TooStupid2Learn, Jan 20, 2010
I get embarrassed and my brain locks-up when I attempt to speak around people I don’t know which is a major problem for me. - TooStupid2Learn, Jan 20, 2010

I had two years of high school Spanish thirty years ago. Last year I decided to dive back into it since my job is sending me to Mexico on a semi-regular basis. This website is by far the best I've found for offering a progressive learning system, advice, and encouragement. Gadzooks, it's almost fun!

I don't have anyone to practice with in real life so it does take some consistent dedication and immersion with whatever tools and motivators you can find, but I feel that I'm making progress. And that's coming from a classic lazy student and underachiever, so give it a whirl!

I don't have a problem with someone to practice with however this is one of my problems. The person I practice with knows little English, but knows AND understands my limitations just as I know her limitations. - TooStupid2Learn, Jan 20, 2010
*continue* Over time "Spanglish" became the language and offered no advancement in my learning Spanish and her learning English. You know what I mean? - TooStupid2Learn, Jan 20, 2010

Here's an example.

There are a bunch of horses in a corral. The corral fence is 1 foot high. However, all the horses in the corral say to themselves "Well, I tried to walk through the fence and I can't do that, I know I won't be able to jump over it because I can't walk through it! And what if I would hurt myself while I was jumping?" so for the rest of their lives they just walked around the corral, wanting to get out, but not getting out because they thought it was impossible to jump over the fence.

Ok, I know that's kind've a bad example, but I think the point is clear. Sound pretty similar to your situation? So, all you have to do is Jump!! And this is the best place to start "jumping"!

You could start by doing the lessons on here that Paralee teaches. They are under the Learn Spanish tab at the top of the page. Then if you have questions ask us here on the forum and we'll try to help you. Don't be embarassed! Everyone makes mistakes all the time, trust me, I would know! You won't be able to read and speak Spanish perfectly in ten minutes of course, it takes time and effort. But it can be done! wink

Also, you said you cannot read it well, why not try some of the written practices that have been posted on here! Here is a link that has some of them (you have to go down the page a bit) in case you want to try them out. grin

Welcome to the forum. Your problem isn't much different than mine but I think you should change you nickname. No one is too stupid to learn including you. This is an awesome site and I think, if I can learn, you can also. I've tried other programs over the years and nothing is as helpful as this site and the people on it. Stick with us and have some fun in the process.

Yes, this appears to be an awesome site. I found this site while googling information to conjugate a verb that i had in question. While getting the information I needed, I noticed this site had much more to offer. - TooStupid2Learn, Jan 20, 2010

AWWWWW!!!! You're NOT stupid. To learn Spanish, you have already taken a step by signing up. Next you can take "Span¡shD!ct" lessons. After you feel you have a basic foundation, sign up for a community college beginners class or a class through your city. GOOD LUCK!

P.S. We (the users) will help you too!!!
