"Spanish Demystified" does a great job explaining that one.
Imagine I am talking to someone. If I'm talking about a thing closer to me than the other person then I use "este/esta". If the thing is closer to the other person from my perspective then I use "ese/esa". If it's about equally far away from both of us I use "aquel/aquella"

It is on the website http://spanish.about.com. They will give you a very thorough explanation.
After you look at it, or print it etc., press the back button on your browser to get back to spanishDict.com.
I can't explain it. Hopefully, someone who has studied Spanish as a second language can. However, here are some examples of usage: Voy a comprar el coche aquello. Voy a comprar ese coche. Voy a comprar eso.(I'm going to buy the car, that one. I'm going to buy that car. I'm going to buy that.
And the difference between between A ending and O ending is simply gender.
