Difference between mediado/a and a mediados de

Can you please explain the construction
mediada la película -> halfway through the film a mediados de abril/de año -> in the middle of o halfway through April/the year

A mediados is only used to refer to time, while mediado can refer to the midpoint of anything: a period of time, a distance, the capacity of a room, etc.
