"Les" is an indirect object, so it can mean things like "to you guys," "for your guys," "to them," or "for them".

For example:

Les escribiste unas cartas a tus amigas. (You wrote some letters to your friends.)

Notice how "les" is matching "a tus amigas". In order to know who "les" refers to, you either need some extra context other than the sentence or for the information to appear inside the sentence.

"Los" is a direct object, so it replaces a word in a sentence to refer to from a previous sentence.

For example:

No sé dónde están los libros. Los perdí ayer. (I don't know where the books are. I lost them yesterday.)

Here, "los" refers back to "los libros" and it translated as "them".

los "can" be a direct object pronoun. It can also be a definite article as in your own example. - 0074b507, Jan 16, 2010
