San Mateo is equivalent to Saint Matthew or Saint Matthias, just as San Francisco is equivalent to Saint Francis and San Antonio is equivalent to Saint Anthony. However, Mateo is of Hebrew origin. In the original Hebrew, Mateo means, "gift of God."
