Languages develop from other langauges. Spanish developed from -or derived from - Vulgar Latin. In 1492, Antonio de Nebrija edited the first Spanish language grammar to bring all the people from the different kingdoms that composed the Península Ibérica under one and only language. However, some other languages still remain (fortunately!) in Spain, like Catalá, Euskera and others. Nebrija wrote a grammar of the Castilian language, credited as the first published grammar of any Romance language. Similarly, when Italy became one country in the 19th century, they chose one of the dialects (the Tuscan dialect) as their official language.
What you are asking about is called etymology.
Every word has a history and you can look it up in etymology dictionaries on the internet. You will need to figure out their shorthand, (L means Latin, S means Sanskrit).
The history of languages is fascinating, and will also teach you the history of immigration and political history if you dig deep enough.
Here is a link on the history of the Spanish language.
