what is the difference between cake and pie in words for spanish?

they are both called pastel... is there a difference?

Honestly, I've always thought of the word pastel as being more targeted at spongey cake-like desserts and torta being more of a pastry with sweet filling. I could be wrong but this is the way I've been accustomed to using the words.
