When we were travelling in Spain (Andalusia) it seemed like a lot of places we were eating mainly served tapas. A plate might be several slices of sausage, or some kind of vegetable or pastry. We had to order several since there were 5 of us. I never figured out if we were doing it wrong or not...

that is exactly how you are supposed to order Tapas. - chefmarsh, Apr 7, 2012

I worked in several restaurants in Arizona. Some of them served tapas. One of my executive chefs told me that "Tapas" when talking about a restaurant meant small plates. By that, he means that everything is appatizer sized and you usually order several different Tapas. Another chef, this one from Mexico, told me a similar story but reffered to them as snack sized plates. My favorite Tapas we served were a trio of tamales. One beef, one chicken, and one spicy pork with tomatillo salsa. Each one was a little larger than my thumb, but so tasty!
