A stem is the root of the word like in english come is the stem/ root and when ing, ed, es, s, ect. is added the stem stays the same most of the time, i hope that helped a little.

I can only suppose that you are referring to verb stems.

Spanish verbs fall into 3 conjugations: verbs that end in ar, er, or ir.

When you remove the ar, er, ir, ending from a verb, what is left is called the verb stem.

hablar

conocer

vivir

You most often hear this grammar term used when referring to verbs that are stem changing (a vowel in the stem changes) when the verb is conjugated.
