I think Sueño refers to the act of sleeping and cansado is an adjective meaning tired/fatigued.

Tengo sueño I feel tired or sleepy whereas Estoy cansado you are tired through exertion like you have been working hard.

tener sueño means I feel sleepy and cansado is an adjective and it means tired (for men and cansada=tired for women)
