My best language teacher was Doña Rose Bailey, who taught Spanish at a Bible college.

She'd been a missionary to Ecuador, and on the first day of class, she made a grand entrance dressed in beautiful woven clothing, native to the mountain regions. On her head she balanced a huge woven basket brimming with fruit.

A pretty and petite brunette, she used her musical voice to called out a greeting, (in Spanish, of course). Then she put the basket down, and went to the chalkboard to write the names of fruit it contained. Then she asked us to come help ourselves, and as we did, she told us the name of the fruit and asked us to put a check mark next to the name she'd written on the board. We then returned to our seats to enjoy uvas, manzanas, platanos, peras, y duraznos. It was a great way to begin.

She was one who believed that learning a new language could be fun, because every single class featured a surprise. (Wednesday became breakfast day and soon we were making huevos revueltos con chile y chorizo en la pequeña cocina eléctrica cuál usando tenedores, cucharas, cuchillos, y servietas.)

That was many years ago, and although I can still recall many of the other "surprises," I don't have space to list them.

(She taught us some steps of the Flamenco!)

Doña Rosa used the "language experience" approach, setting up delightful situations that forced us to use Spanish in real ways. (The classes were total immersion, too - no English permitted!)

She and her classes were a joy.

My best language teacher was/is(I take his exam tomorrow! big surprise ) Mr. Hormazabal. He is strict when it comes to work and some of his tests are pretty tough but it has made me a better student and my work ethic has greatly increased.

My best (spanish) teacher was Señora Baker.

She was filipina and spoke 8 languages.

She was a short woman and many classmates didn't like her and thought she was crazy.

I liked her though, I thought she was fun and was the one who really got me into wanting to learn spanish and not just having a blow-off class.

I think her perceived craziness was attributed to the cultural difference between her and the people in the class, which I liked actually.

She had amazing stories.

I actually wanted to go back(this was years ago) and thank her but found out she had died. :(

I will always remember her and things she taught.

I just wished I would have thanked her sooner.

I probably butchered that spanish but it está la práctica para hoy. smile

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I have a feeling she knows how you feel! :-) - Dee914, Jan 14, 2010
I misplaced a comment here, earlier. My apologies. But in a way, you have thanked Señora Baker with this essay. Her spirit definitely lives on! - 0057ed01, Jan 14, 2010

He tenido muchisimos maestros de idioma.

I have had many, many language teachers. When I was little, I started going to a summer camp for children where they taught Russian (and later German and Chinese). Everything was immersion. We ate Russian food, and we had to ask for the food to be passed in Russian. When we got mail, we had to ask for it in Russian. When we wanted to swim, we had to state our name, not our own name, but the name we got in Russian.

Every counselor there was a teacher, and I loved all of it. I learned to dance, sing, cook, sew, even take a sauna in Russian. Those memories are some of the best in my life.

I'll bet your English classes are fun, Heidita! I'm guessing your wry sense of humor and your incredible energy make them that way. I'd love to be there in person. - 0057ed01, Jan 14, 2010
