I like what hoercr said. It's not a race. I think of it as a hobby or an interest because I don't have a lot of time to study. (I read a used Spanish textbook I bought at Goodwill between set while "levantar pesas" in my basement and try to go on this great site every other night.)

The benefits besides the excellent advice Luvmew gave you is that it opens your mind to a different way of thinking or "conceptualizing". Putting ideas into language. It's a cheap, safe form of LSD. Also, in the USA the Latino population is growing; even up here in NE Wisconsin. Learning Spanish will help you welcome our new citizens and help them strengthen our country.

There are many benifits to learning Spanish, or any other language. You get more benifits in life when you know more than one language. For example : You are applying for a college. On your papers it said that you have decent grades, never gotten in serious trouble, and your a hard worker. Another person's paper has all of these things and can speak another language. Who is more likely to get accepted????

I've just started taking spanish in school and I have already learned a lot. This site plus school training help me understand grammar and the vocabulary. But I heard that Spanish can and probably will take many more years

Well, I just started this program and i'm already learning a great deal. Just take your time. This is not a race. My husbands family speaks only Spanish so we have a communication barrier. It will take time. Everyone is different but just study the lessons a few times before moving on. Make sure you understand and absorb the information being presented to you or you will end up dazed and confused. smile. Good luck.

I think you answered the question yourself.

All my dads side of the family is from Mexico and I am interested.

What better reason than to communicate with family. Go for it, do it here and enjoy yourself in the process.
