When making polite requests should I use the conditional or the imperfect subjunctive or do both work. For example...

Yo quisiera

Me gustaría

In all my reading last semester I forgot some basic rules. Thanks for all help :0

In class, profs have always said that they are interchangeable... but maybe there is a finite difference, especially across culturals.

(by the way... "me gustaría")

En Mexico, siempre digo, "Quisiera."

Very polite and always earns a smile when "por favor" ends the request.

But that's just what works for me!

(However, I've never heard "gustaría.")
