Sorry Lise- Laroche but Castilla-La Mancha is completely land-locked and does not stick out into the ocean. That I do know for sure!

Una 'mancha' can also be a piece of ground that sticks out from those adjoining it - and as with the case of Castilla - La Mancha - it is province of Spain that sticks out into the ocean. It's capital is Toledo.

I vaguely recall someone asking about this before here on Spanishdict. But, I don't remember the answer. Maybe someone remembers it.

Castilla is a north-central Spanish region and the name refers to Castillo - hence the emblem for this region is a tower

La Mancha - literally 'The Stain" and a central Spanish region - but I can't tell you why it's called the stain!
