"I am going to the cinema". From my point of view this sentence can be have two meanings:

I mean, someone calls me on my mobile phone and asks me: What are you doing now?. And I answer: I am going to the cinema (estoy yendo al cine) (in the process of going to the cinema).

The other question would be: what are you going to do do now?. And I would answer (it does not matter where the question is asked) I am going to the cinema now (voy a ir al cine ahora). It is my intention.

Well. I need to know your opinions or if only it is my own opinion and I am not right.

If you say you will be going to the cinema, you can answer the question "What are you doing now?" like this

Conversation1- Isabella- "Hi Nila! What are you doing right now?" Nila- "I am on my way to the cinema." Isabella- "Oh cool!"

Conversation1 - Isabel-' Hola Nila! ¿Qué estás haciendo ahora? " Nila-"Estoy en mi camino hacia el cine." -Isabel-Oh cool! "

conversation2- Rae- "What are you going to go do now?" Nila- "I am going to the cinema now" Rae- "Cool"

conversation2 - Rae-"¿Qué va a hacer ahora?" Nila: "Yo voy al cine ahora" Rae-"Cool"

hope this helped

You are correct and this use of the present tense to indicate both current and future events can be seen in both Spanish and English. Usually the meaning is taken from context.

I agree that is a matter of the context of the sentense although

if someone calls you on your mobile phone and asks you: "What are you doing now?" you will probably answer either "I am going to the cinema" or "On my way to the cinema"

If you are asked: "what are you going to do do now?" you will probably answer "I will go to the cinema"

Estoy en camino al cine, I am on my way to the cinema. and of course voy a ir al cine, ir + a +infintive of the action verb is always a good way of saying what you are going to do.

Usually, in the US, people say "I am going to the movies." or "I am going to the movie theater". The word "cinema" is not used as much anymore. I am not sure how it is handled in the UK.

If I understand your question correctly, either would be correct. If you have not arrived and someone asks what your are doing, you tell them..."I am on the way to the movies."

If they ask you about the future, you would say "I am going to the movies this afternoon." or if they simply ask what you are doing later.."****I'm going to the movies."

Usually we would add what movie we plan on seeing to that phrase.

I'm not sure if I answered your question, but I hope this helps. smile smile
