How to say -th birthday?

For translating 79th birthday would you say: setenta y noveno cumpleaños or setenta noveno cumpleaños ?

Also for someone I don't know well.. would I still say celebrate(in spanish)?

I'm trying to say (out loud) He just recently had(celebrated?) his 79th birthday.

I was surprised when I learned that 17th was décimo séptimo, but it makes sense.

79th would be, technically, septuagésimo noveno. I don't think I've ever heard anything like used in normal conversation. Probably 79th birthday would be referred to as "el cumpleaños sententa y nueve".

Numbers in this form are referred to as ordinal numbers. They show the order of things, rather than the quantity.

Anything past 10th would probably be stated using the cardinal number. - CalvoViejo, Jan 2, 2010

He just recently had(celebrated?) his 79th birthday.

(Él/ese hombre) acaba de cumplir los setenta y nueve años.

Debería usar los numeros orinales. Por ejemplo debería decir, esta es décimo cumpleaño de mio. You should use the Ordinal Numbers (1st , 2nd , 3rd, 4th...). For example you should say, This is my 10th (décimo) bithday.
