The difference?

I know that levantarse is to get up and despertarse is to wake up, but, they both mean basically the same.

why bother to make two different words?

For embellishment???

The same reason you can say wake up and get up in English.

It is possible to levantarse without despertarse. This happens when you caminar dormido (sleepwalk).

And vice-versa, as Lisbeth points out. - samdie, Jan 1, 2010

I can wake up but still be in bed: "me despierto." When I get out of bed, "me levanto de la cama". Subtle but meaningful differences.

"Levantar" is also used to say, "Lift" or "Raise," where "Despertar" is just for. "Awaken."
