We use a before a consonant and an before a vowel or a vowel sound.

*I went to see a movie last night.

I went to an exhibition yestrday.

My friend is an honest man.*

We use a/an wnen it doesn't matter which particular person or thing we are talking about; when we mention this person/thing as an example of a group/category; or when we mention something for the first time.

The teacher is talking to a student from my class.

We bought a new car. (one of many cars. it's not important which one precisely)

I saw a girl walking down the street.
