Better ask a native. That's always confused me. On one hand they say use it for specific nouns not non-specific, but then when referring to abstract nouns use it. Like el leer, el beber. I'll PM you an article. - 0074b507, Dec 28, 2009

"los códigos de conducta" is correct. 'conducto' is actually a different word. :) - chaparrito, Dec 28, 2009
