1. prep. *despite : in spite of* (often used after its object)
*The lack of a catalog notwitstanding, it was a very interesting exhibit*

2. adv. *nevertheless* (sin embargo, no obstante) o *in spite of this*
*Harry Potter saga is very famous around the world. They notwithstanding,
has not seen one of his movies.*

3. *conjunction*. *Although : inspite of the fact that*
*Notwithstanding they were provoked, they ought to not to have reacted so
    violently.*

¡Bienvenido a SpanishDict, Alexis! grin

"The book paints a picture of a nation in decay, its outward appearance notwithstanding."

Notwithstanding the efforts of health organizations, the responsibility of caring for one’s health falls on each one of us.

Extreme cases notwithstanding, the idea of collecting things is hardly peculiar to modern times.

More examples:

  • He is quite intelligent, his SAT scores notwithstanding.
  • He is a very fast runner, his latest time notwithstanding.
  • He is lazy and useless, Susan's opinion not withstanding.
  • Notwithstanding any provisions of law to the contrary, compensation shall not exceed two hundred thousand dollars.

This last example is best. "Notwithstanding" is usually used in legal documents or other formal contexts.

Good Point about legal documents. I have read (or tried to) legal briefs and they seem to be in their own unique language! :-) - chaparrito, Dec 24, 2009

alt text Alexis:

This is an interesting question because deciding how to answer it is a challange. One thing I noticed is that in each of the dictionary examples the words "in spite of" appears as a part of the definition. "In spite of" means that something "does not matter" in this case. I have re-written each of the examples using the words "does not matter". In the re-written examples, i have described what it is that "does not matter" to try to give you a better understanding of what the sentences mean.

You will also see that in order to help to understand the whole sentence it is necessary to know what "notwithstanding" or "does not matter" are referring to. Understanding the sentences is heavily dependant on knowing the words which are not written or said. I have shown the implied words in brackets (like this) and in blue (like this).

Have a look at the table below:

.Using the word "notwithstanding". ..Using the words "does not matter"..
. .
The lack of a catalogue notwithstanding (anyone’s interest in the exhibit), it was a very interesting exhibit. The lack of a catalogue does not matter (to anyone’s interest in the exhibit); it was a very interesting exhibit.
. .
The Harry Potter saga is very famous around the world. They notwithstanding (that the saga is famous), have not seen one of his movies. The Harry Potter saga is very famous around the world. It (that the saga is famous) does not matter they have not seen one of his movies.
. .
Notwithstanding (what caused them to be provoked) they were provoked, they ought to not to have reacted so violently. It (what caused them to be provoked) does not matter that they were provoked; they should not have reacted so violently.

I hope this is a help to understanding all the uses of "notwithstanding". There is a risk that I am only adding confusion to your thinking, but I hope not. I guess the idea I want to give you is that when you see the word "notwithstanding" look for something that has been said or written earlier or implied that can be ignored, suppressed or overridden because "it does not matter."

I don't use notwithstanding in english and in spanish its use of the translation without thinking about it.
