Translations are often given with leeway so ¿Qué tan lejos está la playa? Is often translated as "How far is the beach?" but it could be translated as "How much further is the beach?" couldn't it? Tan = much. ¿Qué tan lejos está la playa?
It is my interpretation. I am not a native speaker but I have been getting better lately so view that as you will. I'm sure this thread will get visited by a native.
