Conjugation for 2nd person plural.

Question

In Lesson 1.7 Paralee teaches conjugation for "Ir", She tests "how do you say 'you go plural' there are two answers for that. Váis if you're in Spain, van everywhere else."

So does that mean if I am not in Spain I should use "-an"(which is the conjugation for 3rd person plural) for addressing 2nd person plural at all times?Or is she referring 3rd person formal ustedes?

Here is a quote that I cut and pasted from on of our reference pages:

 

vosotros, vosotras (you, plural informal)
•Vosotros/as is used to speak directly to a group of people you are very familiar with (see tú)
•Vosotros is used as the informal, or familiar, form of "you" plural in Spain. Most other Spanish-speaking countries do not use vosotros.

 

This is the reason that Paralee gives the instruction that unless you are in Spain, you can pretty much ignore "vosotros/as" since it is unused elsewhere.

You can use both, go with the ustedes (i.e van) Spaniards will know what you are talking about - the vosotros is used almost exclusively in Spain, it won't help you much elsewhere and the ustedes form is much easier anyway

You use -an when you want to address the person with respect (formal) and -áis for close friends, family members or someone younger even if you are not in Spain.
