Wondering about Emoticons

I have noticed that everyone ( well, not everyone but a lot of experienced users ) use big emoticons that can bounce or wave or move or turn green or do a bunch of other stuff.
So, my question is, how do you get those? The only emoticons I have found to use are the ones that come on the site ( 
etc. ). Is there a way for my poor little ignorant self to use/find these cooler looking emoticons?
