what is the meaning of "la pampa"?

"La Pampa" appears in a text about a language (in fact a jerga) spoken in Rio de La Plata in Argentina. It says that many of the expressions in this language came from either Italian immigrants and from La Pampa. From the context I understand it is a name of a place or a region, but I am not sure.

It's an extension of thousands of km2 of plain grassy land. And is the name of an Argentine province.

I don't think "La Pampa" is a European word. It means of course "grassland". It is also the name of an Argentinian province, which has its capital at Santa Rosa.
