Commenting on Answers/Questions
I have found that I will comment on something, and then, later, I will go back to see if someone has said anything, yet, I cannot find the post I commented on.
So, I was thinking that it would be very helpful if we could receive some sort of "notification" (possibly like facebook etc.) whenever we comment on something and then someone else comments on that, or maybe even when we ask a question and someone answers it or comments on it.
I know that for questions you can click to "watch" the question, but they do not have this feature for commenting, and, even when you watch it, you have to go to your email to see if someone else has said anything.
What do you think about this idea?

This is a reflection of the "new philosophy". The whole business of voting for questions/answers is supposed to lead to a database of "great questions" accompanied by their "great answers". (Presumably, although nobody has made this explicit, the "non-great" answers would eventually be discarded). The end result being that, if you had a "good" question, you could consult this database and find there the "best" answer. The corollary being, if your question wasn't really very "good", you would find neither your question, nor its answer.
My own opinion is that the best questions spawned "other" questions/discussions and caused people to think about what they said (and why they said it that way). If pushed, I suppose I'd go so far as to say a question that has only one good answer is a trivial question.
All of us have the experience (when speaking our native languages), of engaging in "automatic" conversations. The basic communication being "I'm still alive and so, apparently, are you." However chimpanzees can do as much (not verbally, perhaps, but with the same results).
Good points, everyone. And I agree that the author of a thread should know when someone has commented on his/her question. I have sent Chris a message letting him know your opinions and ideas. I'll let you know what he says.
Eddy is correct. I remember when I started in the forum, a comment would bump a thread to the top again. I believe this was discontinued in the late summer, with a thread explaining the reason why.
I too feel bad sometimes because I will notice that someone commented on something I answered, but I didn't see it until maybe days or weeks later.
It would be a great feature to know when someone comments on something we have submitted, but not understanding the technical side of things, this may not be possible.
As Ken suggested, the easiest way to keep up is to check "My Answers" frequently. Other than that, there have been times when people have left a comment for me, but were not sure if I saw it. If what they said was important enough, they left a pm to tell me to look for it.
I love the idea, hlsbookworm! I've thought about this many times, wishing that I could know if a comment was added to my answer, or added after one of my own comments. I hope that Chris decides to help in some way.

I believe we did have some form of this in that a comment would push the thread back to the top of the leader board, however, this was discontinued.
I can understand why this feature is not here anymore because it seems to me that that would make a lot of threads be at the top that weren't exactly necessary and would get kind've repetitive. But is there not some way that a tab or something as Brett suggested:
To have something on your user page like "new comments on my questions"
could be added?
Yes if you answer a question you can always keep track on it by clicking on my answers but if you just make a comment it is often lost and you don't know whether or not someone has commented or replied to your comment.
Just trying to get this post back to the top so that someone will see it and express their opinion ( since I really want to know what people think ) and to see if someone will tell me if the idea is possible to do.
