En el pasado, yo imaginaba que la familia hispana típica es muy unida. No sé exactamente por qué. En la escuela secundaria aprendí que estadounidenses generalmente pasan más tiempo solo que las personas hispanas. Esto puede ser la verdad, pero la cultura moderna está afectando a todo el mundo.
In the past, I imagined that the typical Hispanic family is very close-knit. I do not know exactly why. In high school, I learned that Americans genrally spend more time alone that Hispanic people. This could be true, but the modern culture is affecting the whole world.

¿unida or íntima?
También puedes decir "el porqué"=the reason why. It's a noun which looks more appropriate here
