double object pronouns and preterite tense!
I need to rewrite these sentences in the preterite tense and also use double object pronouns. Can someone please help me understand what I am doing wrong??
- Rebeca quiere comprarle un regalo a Jorge.
- Les hago una cena deliciosa.
- Los López le dicen unos chistes (jokes).
- Francisco no puede prestarnos el auto.
- Les debes decir tu apellido a los dueños.
- Te traigo unas cosas importantes.
My attempt: 1. Rebeca quiso se lo compró a Jorge. 2. Se la hice deliciosa. 3. López se los dijo. 4. Francisco no pudo nos lo presta. 5. Se lo debes tu appellido. 6. Te las traigo.

Rebeca quiere comprarle un regalo a Jorge.
Rebeca quizo compráselo.
Les hago una cena deliciosa.
Sela hice.
Los López le dicen unos chistes (jokes).
Selos dijeron los López
Francisco no puede prestarnos el auto.
Francisco no pudo prestárnoslo.
Les debes decir tu apellido a los dueños.
Selo debiste decir.
Te traigo unas cosas importantes.
Telas traje.
Okay thanks! I tried that and it didn't work either because I forgot the accent mark over the a in comprarselo...
I thought that maybe because le-lo wasn't next to each other that it didn't matter, but it isn't correct to seperate them anyways so it wouldn't work. Thanks for your help!
"Rebeca quiso comprarselo" is better. (You should attach the pronouns to the end of the infinitive) You can also say "Rebeca selo quiso comprars." No, you shouldn't say: "Rebeca quiso le comprarlo". The whole point of pronoun combinations is to avoid the repetition of l's. le-lo is hard to say quickly, so it becomes "selo."
Okay... so using double object pronouns and the preterite the 1st sentence would be...
Rebeca quiso se comprarlo. (un regalo a Jorge).
is that correct? Can you say Rebeca quiso le comprarlo?
Oh...I wanted to point out, too, that "Los Lopez" seems to me to be plural.
You wrote
- López se los dijo.
But that would be singular, don´t you agree? "dijo" implies that only one Lopez told those jokes.
I can get you started to better understand the first sentence, sonjacasey -- I hope![]()
You must put the verb "quiere" in that sentence into the preterite because "querer" is what Rebecca is doing. "Comprarle un regalo a Jorge" is what she wants.
What I am suggesting is that you do not then need to put comprar in the past! (You incorrectly wrote "compró".)
In English you can more readily see what I mean:
Rebeca wants to buy Jorge a gift versus Rebeca wanted to buy Jorge a gift.
Now you can try again!! Maybe it will be easier.
