This is a question about the word "si"

Is it spelled "sí" or "si" ?

In other words, does it have to have an accent mark on the "i"

Sí = Yes

Si = if

the accent makes a huge difference in the meaning, so yes you do need the accent.

A lot of people are omitting the other two forms of "Si" . There are four total:

Sí = Affirmative, means 'yes'. Carries an accent and a brief pause in speech. example: "Sí, vamos a la fiesta en la noche"

Si = Conditional , means 'if'. No accent and no pause example: "Si no llegas a ir a la fiesta, me avisas"

Sí= Reflexive personal pronoun (short for sí mismo / sí misma) meaning himself, herself, itself, oneself, yourself (as in the formal usted), yourselves (ustedes) or themselves -- depending on the context. Carries an accent example: "Ella decidió ir a la fiesta por sí misma" or "Ellos discuten entre sí"

Si= B (musical note), no accent example: "La melodía esta en Si mayor"

Hey, froglove, excellent question!

You are right - there are two ways to spell the word! "Si" (no accent) means "if". "Sí" (accent) means "yes".

Hopefully this has cleared it up for you.
