Hi Demi. Welcome to the forum grin

You use "al" (a contraction of a + el) when you are taking about a masculine noun and "a la" when you are talking about a feminine noun.

For example:

Voy al gimnacio (I'm going to the gym)

Voy a la tienda (I'm going to the store)
