You use ser for: 1. Description 2. Nationality 3. Origin 4. Occupation 5. Religion 6. Telling time 7. Date 8. Made of (material) 9. Possession

You use estar for: 1. Health 2. Location 3. Temporary condition 4. Present progressive

You use estar to describe the location of an object or to answer the question "How are you?" You use ser any time that you want to use "to be" in a sentence that is not included in the description of when to use estar.
