I corrected this, thanks to Robertico whose comments I always find very helpful.

La esperanza comienza en la oscuridad, la esperanza terca que si usted acaba de aparecer y trata de hacer lo correcto, el alba vendrá.

Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don't give up.

La esperanza empieza en la oscuridad, la esperanza terca que si usted acaba de aparecer y trata de hacer la cosa correcta, el alba vendrá. Usted espera y mira y trabaja: usted no abandona.

There is a difference between empezar a comenzar.

Empezar is used more when we talk about starting times. "La pelicula empieza a las siete" --- The movie starts at seven...

Comenzar on the other hand means to begin "Voy a comenzar un proyecto" --- I'm going to begin a project.

"La esperanza comienza en la oscuridad...

"...la esperanza obstinada (terca) --- an alternative word.

I would say: ...lo correcto... Just because it sounds better.

My opinion is that in Spanish terco is not an adjective that could be used to describe Los hechos. There are a number of adjectives that can be used, but terco (to me) doesn’t sound right.

Flexible does sound right. Influenciable means that is easily influenced.

Los hechos son definitivos (concluyentes, irrevocables, terminantes) pero las estadísticas son más flexibles.

Correction:

"No hay nada tan terco como un hecho, pero las estadísticas son más flexibles."
