Creo que esos verbos proceden del griego. Hay varios verbos que terminan en "-ize" o "-ise" en inglés: "to advertise", "to surprise", "to recognize", "to improvise", "to aggrandize", "to equalize".

Para contestar tu pregunta específica, creo que la raíz de las palabras "equal" y "to equalize" viene del griego, y que la terminación "-ize" solo funciona para convertir la palabra en verbo. No creo que haya ninguna regla específica para eso.
