Hace un año fuimos a Cozumel, México. ¡Ay Caramba! 
¡Qué magnífica experiencia! Planeamos otra visita en Abril. Y esta vez llevaremos

I'm afraid that I am certain there are sharks nearby...even in my swimming pool, which I no longer have. If I tried to swim at night in my pool, my brain was certain there were sharks in there. I tried to reason with it.
"You're not seriously getting in this dark, deep water, are you? I can't see the bottom. There's probably a shark in here."
"It's an above ground pool and we're 15 miles from the ocean. The pool is 4ft deep and 15ft across. There are no sharks in here, but if there were, I think we'd have bumped into them by now."
"No, we need to get out now! The water's dark. You cannot see clearly. When the water is dark, it means probably there is a great white nearby. WHAT JUST HIT OUR FOOT?!?"
"It was a big leaf. The pool is under a maple tree."
"NO! IT WAS A SHARK! They always bump into you first! That's how they figure out what you are. He's probably circling us right now! We can make it if you'll just get out NOW! Please start heading for ladder!"
NO! This is stupid. There's not a shark for miles! We're on the land in this little pool. I will not let you do this to me.
THE LADDER! WE'VE GOT TO GET OUT! ANY MINUTE AND HE'LL BITE OUR LEG OFF!
"Well, obviously, you're not going to let me enjoy this swim. I'm guess I might as well go inside. You win."

The conversation above was made-up, of course, but seriously I did have shark-o-phobia in my backyard pool at night and couldn't talk myself out of it. I did stay in the pool for quite some time just because, but I was resisting panic the whole time. It was weird.
I have arthritis and occasionally I go to the Gulf for therapy. I go out a little past my knees and then completely relax on my back, but never more than a few minutes because knee-deep water is all a shark needs. So, I scan for a few minutes and then back on my back. The whole time my brain is certain a bull shark is just a few feet away checking me out noticing how seal-like I look. He got there right after my last scan, so I didn't notice him, and he'll get me before my next scan. I should probably stand up right now and scan again.

When my sister lived in Queensland we used to go diving/snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, off Queensland. It was magical - except for the time my group got caught in a rip - that was frightening....

Man.... I had a wonderful experience. After not snorkeling for almost 15 years I traveled to the Keys with friends for christmas a few years ago. At some point we decided to stop and actually take a boat-trip and we were handed some snorkels.
That day the visibility was more or less 40 feet, and MAN! It was amazing! I swam next to barracudas, and they were gorgeous.
Before I've only snorkeled around the North of Chile, in South America, in the not so peaceful waters of the pacific ocean. There are some secluded beaches where, if you have the gear, the visibility can get pretty exciting, and the fishes you can see are great!
So far, no scuba diving for me. We'll see for my next trip.

I have only three experiences of diving or snorkeling. They were in the fresh water of Georgian Bay among Canada's Great Lakes, in the waters of the Aegean Sea, near Athens, and in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
Of my three experiences, there is just no question that BVI was the most outstanding. The aqua life is of many species and the colours are knockouts. There is coral of many kinds, colours and shapes. I felt as though I was in the aquarium with the exotic tropical fish native to those waters. Magnificent!
Oh, yes, and my wife was at home during the coldest week ever in recorded Ontario (Canada) winter weather. She blistered my ears when I got home.
Avoid fresh water. The bottom is grey, the fish are gray. the plant life, what there is of it, is grey. In fresh water there are two shades of grey, the shades are grey and gray. Bummer!
