Berlitz works well for me and compatible with windows vista. not much else is. Some where on this site there is a thread about all the software, sorry I cannot give you the exact source. Rosetta stone is even reviewed there.

Maybe some one else can put the url in .

Honestly, save your money for now. Click on "Learn Spanish" above and go through all 4 free video lesson series and complete all the interactive associated lessons.

While you are doing this, start watching your DVDs with the Spanish language track turned on (or Spanish subtitles).

And listen to streaming Spanish music via the internet.

And, when you've done all that, see if you still think you need to buy Berlitz or Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone.

totally agree. I've wasted time and money on softwares and have realized that the free spanish help I've found online as well as meeting up with a native speaker every week or so is much more helpful! - adai2003, Nov 13, 2009
Hmmmmmm. That is a good idea!! - mike123587, Nov 13, 2009

Pimsleur without hesitation. It's really great if you want to become conversational in the language and understand how to form phrases and understand natives. I also like their teaching approach when it comes to Reading. They teach you the new sounds and sound combination in your new language before they worry about reading for meaning. It makes a lot of sense if not you start using the English sound system to read Spanish. There's no method I've tried (including Berlitz, FSI, Rosetta and Thomas) that will bring you to the same level as Pimsleur does in such a small amount of time.

PS: FSI is very very outdated and nowhere close to the quality of Pimsleur.

I disagree having done the first 60 Pimsleur lessons and the first third of FSI. Please explain how it is "outdated". It was made in 1967 not the 1800s. - jeezzle, Nov 13, 2009

Well, I can't swing with Berlitz. Pimsleur is OK but really limited too. If you search around you can find the FSI course on the net. Of course, the audio is old and scratchy so you really have to listen...or you can buy the remastered course on Amazon under the name "Learning Like Crazy". (100 bucks per level). Rosetta is terrible and you won't learn anything there. If I were you I would find the FSI and maybe buy this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071479023/ref=cm_cr_asin_lnk. I think I might buy it as well. Looks cool.

Pimsleur is great. So what there are maybe 500 words. It starts you off small. I just finished Spanish II and only know bits and pieces. I learned more from Pimsleur than Spanish 1 or II - mndbnks, May 18, 2010

Foreign service institute. Here's a review: http://learnspanishonyourown.com/fsi_spanish_review.htm. It favors Pimsleur slightly but FSI seems more comprehensive to me. - jeezzle, Nov 13, 2009
