"pretérito" in spanish is past tense. For example in English, the past tense is used like this: I walked to the store.

Here is the sentence in Spanish: Yo caminé a la tienda.

Préterito, préterito perfecto simple, and préterito indefinido all refer to the same indicative tense.

Many verb tenses in Spanish, however contain the term préterito and it may be better to think of this word simply as pasado or past. (copretérito [préterito imperfecto], pospretérito [condicional simple], préterito perfecto compuesto, préterito anterior, préterito pluscuamperfecto, etc.)

As you see, the word préterito can refer to the English preterite, but in its more generally meaning of actions that occurred in the past.
