Actually, though I have never seen or heard "sip" used in Spanish, there is a very common form, similar to this, found predominantly in Mexico City: The word form is not "sip," as you have written it. It is, rather, "sipi." Indeed, "sipi" is used in exactly the same context as "yep," in English. The word is pronounced "see-pee" for, in Mexican Spanish (versus 'Castilian'), the letter "i" in a word is always pronounced as a long "e."

Was this at all useful? While I am not a native Spanish speaker, I am surrounded by well-educated, professionals who are such... from Mexico, Latin America and Spain.

Respectfully,

Dr. Jonas Moses

I use 'sip' in conversations with my Latin American friends on chat often. It does mean 'yes' or 'yep/yup.' It can also be a more expressive form of 'yes,' as in 'yes!!!!' or 'sip!!' The opposite form of 'sip' is 'nop' which equals the English 'nope' in instant messaging.

Si = yes, sip = yep ... get it? The movie was "Finding Nemo" by the way. - webdunce, Nov 5, 2009
THANK YOU!! This makes all the sense in the world. I have had to try decipher it several times in "chats" w/ both Mexican and Colombian friends. I was pretty sure from the context, but w/ slang/idioms it can be hard to know for sure. - tgtg123, Aug 30, 2010

I agree with besa_luna. If the person is from Chile (like my husband), it is probably also influenced by (or an abbreviated form of) what they often say which is "Sí po!" which means "Sí pues".

What are the other Spanish words for 'yes'. Words for this that I can think of in English include: 'yes', 'yeah', 'ya', 'yo', 'yep, 'yip', 'aye', and 'uh hu', and in French I can think of 'oui', 'ouais' and 'si' (contra-affirming a negative).

Come to think of it, is there a Spanish equivalent of the French 'si' ? There isn't really a direct English equivalent, although perhaps there ought to be, as it's rather useful in French...

wink

Hola Shinton: Welcome to SpanishDict.

If you mean can you translate "sip" into Spanish, there is a box at the top of this page that says "Translate", and so you can do it yourself easily.

If it is a Spanish word, I really do not know. Maybe somebody else will come in and help.
