When trying to say "the same," should mismo be preceded by "el" or not?

A friend and I were discussing the word "mismo," and we are wondering if mismo should have an el before it for "the same" or if its just knowing that that's what one is trying to say when "mismo" is used. Muchas gracias!

If you say "lo mismo", here "lo" means it --- It is the same. Es lo mismo.

"El mismo", here El means He or Him --- Lo hizo el mismo. He did it himself.

There is a very good thread on this subject, maybe somebody will find it for you. I'll look and see if I can find it.
