He surrounded himself with a wall of cultural, religious, racial and sexual prejudices in order to delude himself that he lives in the world governed by infinite order.

You cannot use "la valla" here as a metaphor as in English. "El creó una barrera" He built a barrier...This is one way, also…”El se sumergió en un mundo…”---He sank into a world…(this last one is more in your style). - 0068e2f4, Oct 31, 2009

In Cali, Colombia, the city I was born, there was a place called "Las Vallas", because there were a lot of billboards in it.

I remembered they had a commercial on the radio that said: "Vayas donde vayas nos veremos en Las Vallas"

Juan was a man who liked to disregard social conventions. He was finally banned from the forum.

You seem content to ride the fence when you know which side is greener.

You guys will be a lot safer in you don't try using "la valla" as a metaphor. Remember that you cannot translate literally. - 0068e2f4, Oct 31, 2009

Since my word of the day was used wrong I am submitting another one.

Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.

Too many people build fences when what we need is to build bridges.

To have a fence around the pool to protect children from falling in the water is a good idea.

Maybe you could use "surrounding" instead of the first "para", to avoid reperition? - Issabela, Oct 31, 2009
Good suggestion. - 00515f39, Oct 31, 2009

Hi NIcole, I would not use it this way either.

I know it means obstacle, but this is too metaphoric.

substitute the word for obstáculos.

I think you might need a "de". My dictionary says: "salir de algo" - to leave from - Janice, Oct 31, 2009
I think you might need a "que", too. ...prohibir que .... - Janice, Oct 31, 2009
Oh..I think you have to make "salir" agree with "vacas" and maybe even put it in the subjunctive....Now we'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable... - Janice, Oct 31, 2009
Thanks for the suggestions. I made a couple of changes. I have trouble wrapping my brain around the concept of Spanish subjunctive verbs. - rgrove36, Oct 31, 2009

A veces, aprendiendo español aperece una valla demasiada alta.

At times, learning Spanish seems to be too high of a hurdle. (Correcciones, por favor)
