Today's word...la valla is a noun describing a fence, hurdle or goal.

In regards to improving in Spanish, what goal would you like to accomplish during the coming month of Noviembre? Putting it in writing and hearing the encouragement of others may be just the push you need. smile wink

Fence or hurdle but not goal. - 0068e2f4, Oct 31, 2009
La valla de futbol is the net they use in a soccer field to score a goal. Not goal as an accomplishment - 0068e2f4, Oct 31, 2009

Voy a comprar un terreno con una valla electrificada aldredor de ello. En este terreno erigiré una valla publicitaria que dice (en letras grandes) "Aquí vive alguien que comprende la palabra "Valla".

Here it is used correctly because it means fence. - 0068e2f4, Oct 31, 2009

Are we positive that we can use the "valla" in this way to indicate an objective or a goal? Would a native speaker please confirm.

Pues lo siento: we cannot!

Valla means fence or obstacle, we can use this figuratively, but even that is seldom done.

It cannot be used as goal.

All the sentences where : my goal for November is...mi valla para noviembre es

Are not correct.

Barrera or obstaculo are more universally known, but I guess in some countries you can use it to indicate an obstacle, not an objective.or goal - 0068e2f4, Oct 31, 2009
In fact, I mixed up the "relato" in my post...The title was "Obstáculos". "El buscador" was a second one, although the protagonist of "Obstáculos" is also a "buscador", I suppose. - Janice, Oct 31, 2009

Again...here it means obstacle not goal...this sentence should read " Mi primera meta para Noviembre es no permitirle a Heidi que me envie al rincon de los tontos." - 0068e2f4, Oct 31, 2009
Uh oh, Issabela!...looks like your very wish -as expressed-.may send you to the "rincón" :-) - Janice, Oct 31, 2009

Quiero mucho entender el español de las personas de Chile o por lo mejor también Argentina ...las que me parece a veces - ¡a menudo! - no pronuncian según mi oreja la "s".

Quiero comprender cuándo, -- si quizá existe alguna regla o norma para saber si debo sentir esa "s" sí o no.

Hi again, I am just noticing, that in some countries the word "valla" is also used for "goal" as in where the ball is introduced when playing football.

While we are at it, I would like to remind you we have the best goalkeeper around...even though in the last match it did not show...downer

Well, let's not ramble...the valla as used in other countries is called "portería" in Spain.

Eddy, you prompted me to look the word up in my Gran Diccionario Oxford. I had just learned the word listening to a short story by Jorge Bucay in his "Cuentas para pensar" and a "valla" was the last thing the story´s "buscador" had to overcome, in fact, before reaching his "meta" :--) So the use here on Span¡shD!ct.com was giving me pause, too.

Here is the entry from the dictionary:

valla, femenino

a. (cerca) fence

b. (Dep) (en atletismo) hurdle; 100 metros vallas

c. (en fútbol) goal

And then there is this:

valla publicitaria: billboard (AmE) hoarding (BrE)

(Dep) means "in the language of sports" (AmE) is abbeviation for American English and (BrE), for British English.

c. (en fútbol) goal Just to make sure you guys understand this one. It actually means the net on a soccer field where the ball goes in to score a goal - 0068e2f4, Oct 31, 2009

Querría comprender completamente el "Learn Spanish Four" Videos por el fin de noviembre.

There are several parts of the Learn Spanish level four videos that I don't feel one hundred percent confident with. There are also a few things in the third level I need to work on as well. I really would like to focus on those things in November.

En noviembre mi valla es completar el curso de Rosetta Stone.

Feels like I'm saying "my fence" instead of my goal. I think would like to use objetivo there.

Mi valla para noviembre sería exactemente editar un puesto en español.

My goal for November would be to precisely edit one post in Spanish.

No aprendo cosas nuevas rapidamente. Mi valla para noviembre es como mi valla para octubre, ¡sobrevivir!

Edit: There I scratched it out and it cannot be seen. I had to hide my mistEAk.
