Everything you need to get started is right here on this web site. As suggested, start the Learn Spanish videos and start practicing with some of the flashcard sets. You can even create sets of your own for words you would like to focus on.

In addition, purchase a Spanish/English dictionary. Keep it close by so every time you think of a word you would like to learn, you can look it up. Also, something I have found helpful is to label items all throughout your home with their Spanish names. This way, every time you pass the refrigerator, a mirror, table, bookshelf, etc, you will be memorizing their Spanish names without even really thinking about it.

Finally, spend a lot of time on this forum. There is a new "Word of the Day" to focus on every 24 hours. We usually try to work with that word by building sentences, looking for synonyms/antonyms, etc. There are plenty of people to help you here. This is just a tip, but if you double click on any word in this forum, you will see the Spanish definition pop up in a little blue box. This has been very helpful for me.

-Use our flashcards - they appeal to your mind in three ways: by pictures, the word's graphic (written) form and sound.

-If you have better visual memory, you can use the following techniques: word maps, placing tags with new vocabulary all over your place - you can tag specific objects to learn their names in Spanish.

-If you remember new sounds better, learn through oral repetition, you can e.g. record your voice with new words or even whole sentences.

-Write sentences with your favourite words and phrases. You can post them here for others to check.

-Make your own small flashcards with words you want to learn and browse them on your way to work/school (provided that you are not driving, of course); you can also buy such cards.

-Use our "word of the day" option and post your sentences with them in the relevant topics.

I would recommend making up your own sets of flashcards. I find this is the best way to learn words and phrases. Just go to the flashcards tab right here on spanishdict.com

Am great way to learn Spanish (the best, actually) would be to have been born and raised in a Spanish speaking country. For suggestions about learning Spanish as a second language, read the earlier responses.
