Los Algodones

There is a town we go to in North Sonora, Mexico which is called Los Algodones.
I would like to know what Algodones would mean in English, if there is an interpretation.

Growing up in the cotton fields of New Mexico, I think it means "the cotton bolls" which is what you call the raw cotton when the boll bursts to release seed, the stage at which you pick it. Is there a history of cotton farming in Los Algodones'

It means the cottons, but there is an expression "vivir entre los algodones" that means to be spoiled and overprotected.
