How do you know when to use "estoy" as opposed to "soy"?

Why is "estoy mal" used in Lesson 1 instead of "soy mal". I thought they both mean "I am".

HI Natalia, do have a look at this thread first and do the lesson on "ser y estar" , that is essential to get the hang of it.
